Understanding Your Body Fat Percentage

While BMI is a useful screening tool, it can't distinguish between fat and muscle. Your Body Fat Percentage (BFP) provides a much more accurate picture of your body composition and overall health. It is the total mass of fat divided by total body mass, multiplied by 100.

How is Body Fat Percentage Calculated Here?

This calculator uses the U.S. Navy Method, also known as the "circumference method." It's a widely respected and surprisingly accurate way to estimate body fat without expensive equipment. The formula uses your height, neck, and waist circumference (and hip for females) to calculate your BFP.

This method is based on the principle that by measuring specific body parts, one can get a reliable estimate of an individual's body composition. It's the same method used by the U.S. Armed Forces to assess the fitness of their personnel.

Why Body Fat Percentage is Crucial for Systemic Health

Health science recognizes the oral-systemic link. Excess body fat, especially visceral fat around your organs (which is better indicated by BFP and Waist-to-Height Ratio than BMI), is a major source of inflammatory proteins called cytokines.

  • Chronic Inflammation: These inflammatory cytokines travel throughout your bloodstream, causing a state of chronic, low-grade inflammation which can affect overall health.
  • Compromised Healing: High levels of inflammation can impair your body's ability to heal.
  • Link to Other Diseases: High body fat is a risk factor for Type 2 Diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

By managing your body fat percentage, you are not just improving your overall health; you are actively creating a healthier internal environment. A lower body fat percentage can even improve your Metabolic Age.

Healthy Body Fat Percentage Ranges
