Macros: The Building Blocks of Your Diet
"Macros" is short for macronutrients, the three main categories of nutrients your body needs in large amounts to function: Protein, Carbohydrates, and Fats. Balancing these macros is essential for achieving your fitness goals, whether it's losing fat, building muscle, or maintaining a healthy weight.
How We Calculate Your Macro Split
This calculator provides a personalized macronutrient split based on your selected health goal:
- Determine Target Calories: First, we adjust your TDEE based on your goal (e.g., creating a 500-calorie deficit for weight loss).
- Apply Ratios: We then split these target calories into percentages for each macronutrient. For instance, a common split for weight loss is 40% protein, 30% carbs, and 30% fat.
- Convert to Grams: Finally, we convert these calorie amounts into grams, knowing that protein and carbs have 4 calories per gram, and fat has 9 calories per gram.
The result is a clear, actionable target in grams for each macronutrient, taking the guesswork out of your diet planning.
Why Macros Matter More Than Just Calories
While calorie counting is important, focusing on macros ensures you're getting the right *quality* of calories. A diet high in protein supports muscle maintenance and growth, which boosts your metabolism (improving your Metabolic Age). Adequate healthy fats are crucial for hormone function and vitamin absorption. Complex carbohydrates provide sustained energy for your workouts and daily life.
A diet balanced in macros is less likely to be high in processed sugars and simple carbohydrates, which can negatively impact health. A high-protein, balanced diet supports a healthy body.
