TDEE Calculator

Estimate your Total Daily Energy Expenditure.

What is TDEE and Why Does It Matter?

TDEE stands for Total Daily Energy Expenditure. It's the total number of calories your body burns in a 24-hour period, including all activities from sleeping and breathing to exercising and working. Understanding your TDEE is the single most important step in managing your weight, whether your goal is to lose, maintain, or gain.

How is TDEE Calculated?

Calculating your TDEE is a two-step process:

  1. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): First, we calculate your BMR using the Mifflin-St Jeor formula, one of the most accurate methods available. Your BMR is the number of calories your body needs to perform its most basic, life-sustaining functions at rest.
  2. Activity Multiplier: We then multiply your BMR by an activity multiplier. This multiplier corresponds to the activity level you select (from sedentary to extra active) and accounts for the calories you burn through daily movement and exercise.

The final number is your TDEE—a personalized estimate of your daily caloric needs. To lose weight, you need to consume fewer calories than your TDEE (a calorie deficit). To gain weight, you need to consume more (a calorie surplus). Once you know your TDEE, you can use our Macro Calculator to determine the ideal split of protein, carbs, and fats.

Using TDEE for a Healthier Lifestyle

Your TDEE is not just a number for weight management; it's a tool for building a healthier lifestyle. A diet that is drastically below your TDEE can lead to muscle loss and nutrient deficiencies, which can negatively impact your overall health.

Chronic nutrient deficiencies can weaken your immune system and affect the health of your bones and tissues. Use your TDEE as a baseline to create a sustainable, nutrient-rich eating plan that supports your body.
